Dr. Janet Sora Chung, originally from Edmonton, Alberta, is an active and versatile musician in New York City where she is Organist and Music Director at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church.
Dr. Chung earned her Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the Manhattan School of Music where she was awarded the President’s Award and the Bronson Ragan award for most outstanding ability in organ performance. Her performance teachers include McNeil Robinson, Walter Hilse, Marnie Giesbrecht and Jacobus Kloppers and pedagogy teacher Carol Ann Aicher.
Also a violinist, Dr. Chung has studied with James Keene (Edmonton) and Sara Caswell (NYC). She has performed and recorded on violin with such groups as Lara Bello, Born Gold and Nat Osborn at the Jazz Gallery, Rockwood Music Hall and The Bitter End. As an organ soloist and accompanist, Dr. Chung has performed at St. Mary the Virgin, St. Ignatius of Loyola Church, SUNY Purchase Performing Arts Center, the Winspear Centre and Riverside Church. Dr. Chung has a passion for performing the works of Messiaen, Bach and Rachel Laurin. She is a grateful recipient of scholarships and support from the Anne Burrows Foundation, the Royal Canadian College of Organists, the University of Alberta, the Alberta Foundation of the Arts and the Winspear Foundation.
